Stop Hiring Unicorns. Start Building Teams.
I don’t know how many times I need to say this...
Hiring a Marketing Manager?
They are not your:
Social Media Manager
Paid Media Manager
SEO Manager
Copywriter
Email Marketing Manager
Events Coordinator
Brand Manager
Affiliate Manager
PR Manager
👉 Inspired by Tom Pestridge, whose insights continue to challenge outdated hiring practices.
These are specialized roles—each demanding unique skills, tools, and experience.
Expecting one person to master them all? That’s not strategic. That’s setting them up to fail.
Recruiters and companies need to do better. A Marketing Manager should lead strategy, not juggle every execution task.
If you want real growth, build a team. Don’t chase unicorns.
What’s one role you’ve seen wrongly bundled into “Marketing Manager”?

So true. I’ve often seen Marketing Managers expected to be full time designers too. One role can’t carry an entire department. Teams create growth, not unicorns.
